in-transit — Be something. Go somewhere. find your thing and create an exciting future.
Are you keen to train for something but you’re not sure what? More than 7,000 young people are choosing to get qualified and stay out of debt while they work. Right now there’s a serious shortage of skilled people in some trades and industries. That means there are lots of jobs to fill and it’s a great time to train for a trade qualification.
If you’re into fixing and creating things and you like to work with your hands, you should think about training for a trade qualification.
Right now there are good opportunities if you want to be an Automotive Electrician, Baker, Boat Builder, Bricklayer, Butcher, Cabinet Maker, Carpenter, Diesel Mechanic, Electrician, Fitter and Turner, Fitter and Welder, Hairdresser, Motor Mechanic, Panel Beater, Plumber, and Sheetmetal Worker.
Tradespeople often have exciting jobs where every day is different. Many qualified tradespeople start up their own successful businesses and become their own boss.
For qualified tradespeople the average hourly rate across the 16 jobs above was around $20.60 – or $824 (before tax) for a standard 40-hour week. Actual pay rates depend on the trade you’re training for as well as your qualifications and experience. If you go on to start your own business you might earn a lot more.
You can study for a qualification at a tertiary organisation like your local polytechnic, or you might do workplace training and learn on the job. That means you’ll get paid while you learn. If you’re aged between 16 and 21 years you can also think about becoming a Modern Apprentice. You’ll get qualified while you work and the Government will cover most of your study costs. It’s a great way to get a qualification without getting into debt.
Remember every job and industry is different. If you’re thinking about working or training in a trade occupation it’s a good idea to talk to other people already working in the industry and find out more about the working conditions and opportunities. What’s the pay like? Do you work weekends? How long are the hours? That way you’ll know all the good and bad stuff and make a better decision.
